THE FRED WOODS TRAIL NEAR DRIFTWOOD

FRED WOODS TRAIL The Fred Woods Trail for those who like to hike is a most interest place. The trail is 4.57 miles long and clearly marked with blazed yellow markings. The first part of the trail leads to a loop, and along the loop is a most unique formation of large, huge rocks majestically place by nature on top of a mountain overlooking the Valley Below. The Valley below is the Bennett's Branch, and the view from this vantage point offers several of the most breath taking views that Pennsylvania has to offer.

In between the large rocks there are a number of crevices and passage ways. On the wall of one of these passage ways is carved the name "J. E. Hicks - May 10, 1908", and another is "Jordon - 9-8-1901." The Jordon family is acknowledged as the first family to settle on what now is the village of Driftwood. The Levi Hick family was the first permanent settlers of Hick's Run. Levi Hick's was the first person to float log rafts down the Bennett's Branch, and later served as a rafting pilot for Miles Dent.

You may want to pack in a bottle of water. In the hot summer days remember and be on the lookout for rattlesnake that inhabit the area. This is a most beautiful site, take only picture and leave only footprints.

The trail is located on Mason Hill Road which intersects Route 255 about one mile east of Driftwood. The entrance to the trial is about 2.75 miles from the intersection. About a mile before you get to the trail there is a road at the crest of the mountain there is a road to the right that take you to an overlook of the Sinnemahoning and the Bennett's Branch.
